Default 4l60e Problem?!??

OK..IVE BEEN NOTICING A WHINE COMING FROM THE TRANNY SINCE I INSTALLED IT THREE WEEKS AGO. IVE BEEN NOTICING LATELY A LACK OF POWER AND KINDA DELAYED SHIFTS. NOW TODAY I FELT IT SLIPPING UNDER HEAVY THROTTLE ON MY WAY HOME. GOTIT HOME AND NOTICED THAT THE TRANNY COOLER IN FRONT OF THE RADIATOR WAS TOTALLY COLD. THIS IS AFTER HARD DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY FOR 20 MINS. I UNDONE ONE OF THE HOSES GOING TO THE COOLER FOR PRESSURE AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO FLUID COMING OUT!! BUT WHATS GOT ME IS THAT I STILL HAVE ALL DRIVE GEARS ?!? COULD THERE BE A POSSIBLE CLOG IN ONE OF THE LINES OR COOLER? IM AFRAID TO EVEN DRIVE IT AND BURN THE TRANNY UP, IT WAS A REBUILT UNIT THAT HAD BEEN SITTING FOR A FEW MONTHS. ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS? BAD PUMP? WHAT ABOUT THE CONVERTER? ITS A STOCK STALL V6 CONVERTER.

Somethings blocked first I would remove the lines at trans and start and see if I have any flow and work from there , I definatly would not drive it because if theres no cooler flow you could have allready done substaintial damage in only a few miles

Yes because if its moving it has pressure but something has happened to block cooler flow ,The whine you are hearing driving are dry planets cooking ,Though I hope you have not I would be very afraid as i said considerable damage may have allready been done

oh man..that sucks..definitely makes since..the way i thought the cooler lines were is that the pump pumped fluid from the pan through the cooler and then into the converter then tranny...is that wrong?

the pump does pump from the pan but to the converter and the cooler but lube to the planets is the return from the cooler .

ewwww....toasty...i have been thinking that the whine was jus the pump...hopefully the damage isnt too bad..i had jus put the cooler on last week and know there was pressure cuz one of the rubber lines had a very small cut and fluid was spewing. so i know its a recent problem. i had to do the 94valve body swap off my burned up tranny into my rebuilt 95 for the lockup. if there is a blockage, could it be something in the valvebody? or maybe the tranny lines or stock radiator cooler? my old tranny had issues and broke several times and the last time it was going it had some loose debri,i guess, that would block something every once and a while and wouldnt shift on its own.i had to manually shiftdown to 1st,then to second and then to third but was not all the time. so maybe this is related?

it could be related I would first determine if youcan get fluild directly from the tranny line , then check the cooler and bypass the raditor cooler in your case, Then once that was solved and you were sure you have cooler flow I would drop the pan to get and idea of ust how much damage has been done

and of course i didnt think to flush the lines and stock cooler before the tranny install.and i hate to say it but i didnt clean the valve body very good...was in a hurry and didnt want to mess with the checkballs...i know...not the smartest thing to do..i do regret not doing that now.

well when you return cooler flow it will wash whatever damage may have been done right into the pan , But good luck let me know how it goes

Good thread.. and good advice. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Definately don't drive it until you are certain you have cooler flow! Run it with the wheels off of the ground on jack stands making sure the tires have ample clearance from the ground and the stands. This will take the load off of the transmission and will allow you to test it properly without risking further damage. Do not under any circumstances run it while simply sitting on a jack... use jack stands!!!!!

The one bit that I would add is too look very carefully at the hose ends where they connect to the cooler. It is possible for the inside of the hose to have been sliced when installing the hose, that may be the culprit. Not likely, but be sure to look.

ok i must have debri in the radiator tranny cooler i bypassed it and have flow going in and out of tranny and the cooler. its shifting fine..but not as hard as it was when first installed. i have a shift kit in it. also i didnt have time to drop the pan and see what damage might be in there but i drove it around and fluid is still looking good and no particles floating. i guess all is well....for now

Did you ck the cooler lines to see if they warmed up? Also... get that cooler flushed or get a new one... don't run it hard without one. Especially if you have anything other that a stock converter.

ok guys. a new problem has arisen . today i drove my car to work and is the first its been driven since i took it for a spin the other day after the cooler problem. seems that first and second are ok but third and especially fourth is slipping and giving it more than a qtr of gas it doesnt accelerate, just revs. dont seem to be locking up either. please tell me this isnt some major damage. im thinking about buying some kevlar clutches and doing a rebuild on it. what do you think? would this fix the problem? and i know i should take it to a trans shop but simply dont have the funds. and this is my daily driver and gotta keep down time to a minumum. what is your advice?

You are losing the 3-4 clutches, drive it very easy in 3rd & 4th to make it last for awhile while you determine what you are going to do.

The whine could be from the cooler having been blocked and the planets may well be damaged from heating
