Default My ticking engine. Pics of lifters

I was thinking that my cam may of went bad and damaged a lifter but now I don't think so. All the lifters seem to be smooth. They have some lines on the rollers but it's nothing that can be felt. I'm thinking that's normal for the stock lifters with 60k on them. I've been fighting the ticking since I put the cam in. My cam only has about 2000 miles on it. I just wonder if the extra spring pressure took a toll on the 60k lifters. Not all of them ticked but one or two did. The cam seems to look fine. what do ya think?[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

I don't think you'd be able to see the defect. My guess would be that one or two of them aren't pumping up as much as the others introducing slack into the lifter-pushrod-rocker-valve system and causing the tapping. I'd soak the lifters in some penetrating oil and work them back and forth. See if you can blow out some coked oil or sludge. That might bring the faulty ones back. Just a suggestion.

You should get a pushod length checker and see what size rods you should have, and then order them in that size. Pushrods that are too short can cause that damn ticking due to the smaller baseline on the cam lobe when people stick with the stock size pushrods.

I have a checker and it said that i needed the 7.425. I did install them and it was better for a while but then I started to get 1 or 2 that started to tick. i have new lifters already so I will use them.

Here is another question, Since i have it torn down ,well i have a brand new cam just like I have in it now and was thinking about just putting it in since i have new lifters. i would hate to have a new lifter get messed up if I happend to have a lobe that wasn't smooth.

over at the other forum...by calculation...a 7.450" pushrod came up on optimum. What has changed?

By measurement, on the other forum, the 7.425's put him at a preload I wouldn't exceed.

I'm going to try the 7.425 and see how it sounds. Hey Vettenuts, you said not to soak the lifter, just the rollers, why is that? I though you should soak the lifter in oil

First clean the lifters with mineral spirit, then you can soak the lifters for 2>3 hrs prior to install in dyno oil (light weight).

Yout don't want them to be solid.
