Default cleaning valves

Whats the easiest DIY way to clean valves up? I know I could take them to the machine shop and have them done, but I would rather do them myself if possible. Let me know if there is a way and how.

If you are talking about just cleaning the carbon off of them, a wire wheel on a bench grinder or glass bead blast.

I use goof-off, it tears carbon right up. Oven cleaner works really well too.
