Default Spark Control

1. What tells the stock ECM the information needed to know when to spark?
2. Is it only the cam position sensor?
3. If not what else?
4. What signal is the output device (cam sensor, ???, etc...) giving the ECM?

I am asking because I want to develop the code to get Megasquirt to control the ignition based on stock sensors, any input would be great. In the true spirit of Megasquirt I will share once developed of course.

Crank sensor, as said, tells the pcm where the piston is. Cam sensor tells the PCM which stroke it is on.
