Default Advantages and disadvantages of no cats

I am a dog person and was wondering what the world would be like if....nahh I am just ******* with you guys. But on a serious note I am thinking of taking off my catalytic converters, but I also have a friend who has a set of Magnaflow cats he is willing to give me cause he took his cats off, Should I just take of the cats of go with the high flowing cats. And if it helps I am planning to put on some qtp or kooks LT headers and aftermarket Y pipe a bigger cam (stock one there now). I also have a cutout already on my car

If your running the Y pippe set up and you dont have cats, you will notice a tonn of rasp. With some set ups it will be less rasp than others, but overall you wil have rasp. If you take those highflow cats and put them on it will take away anychanes of rasp. Then again some ppl will say your loosing some power having those cats there. If I were you i would just take the highflow cats and put them on.

if you get something besides GMMG straight pipes you wont have rasp. do true duals and pick a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler, you could even do a single like 4 inch setup into a muffler, but if you use flowmaster dont use a single in dual out.

Cats don't cost you a whole lot of hp, they help with sound, and they reduce the smell of gas. Duals will have no rasp, with or without cats. Duals and cats are a good combination.

I used bullet mufflers in the place of cats to get rid of the rasp. You can put one in the i-pipe to do the same. After 5 years of running like this, I almost wish I had cats again due to the smell.

The smell is bad.
Plus the sound is more refined with cats.
Do the cats.

advantages:
- 2-3 horsepower
- louder (if you consider this a plus)

disadvantages:
- your car is officially emissions illegal, so if you're caught, no matter what state you live in, you get fined
- MUCH raspier exhaust note
- louder (if you consider this a negative)
- your car will smell like gas
- your exhaust tips and rear bumper will get dirtier faster
- possible thrown codes
- increased highway drone

you have to decide if all these negatives are worth 2-3 horsepower. in my opinion, there is absolutely no reason to ever take the cats off.

NOTE: a bullet in the I-pipe WILL NOT get rid of rasp. it's a band-aid on a bullet wound.

No cats is nice if you like rasp but I think thats the only reason people do it. I had GMMG with longtubes and no cats for almost 5 years and it's pretty raspy. Not as much as some other systems, but it still is. The rasp makes your exhaust really loud and i think that's why people like it so much, or at least why i liked it so much. My new exhaust setup is going to be true duals with magnaflow metal core cats. They barely quiet the car at all, plus your legal if a cop decides to look under the car.

I have Pacesetter longtubes, no cats, and a Hooker catback. This setup creates ZERO RASP. Just a real badass throaty sound. No Disadvantages here. Then again I've been driving uninspected for a year and 2 months. *Knocks on Wood*

um yeah, i dont have any rasp at all with my magnaflow true duals...

if you run straight pipes (loudmouth, GMMG) then you will have rasp for sure, you even have rasp with cats.

I'm running Pacesetter LT's with no cats and the stock SS catback and i'm about ready to add some hi-flow cats. Cant stand the rasp, and the gas smell. I'll give up the 2-3hp.

so, lemme get this straight. the OP wants to know if he should take off his already existing cats, and keeping them costs money? it will cost him money to REMOVE his cats. you didn't read the OP's thread

hundreds of dollars my ***. you can get high flow bullet cats off of ebay for $30 a cat. you can get 2 magnaflow's for $100.
