Default Charging problems?

Why is it that when the gauge cluster is unpluged the alternator does not recharge the battery? This is the second f-body that i have owned that has done this. I am installing all aftermarket gauges so the factory cluster is not plugged in. Does anyone know how to bypass whatever it is that is causing this?

the single wire from the alt goes to the cluster, its one of those things that GM did to help keep people from pulling the clusters and driving them. just hook the wire on the alt to a switched power source.

well if i am not mistaken that runs voltage thru to the PCM...thats y u are getting an open circut so it doesnt fry anything. I think..... u may not want to do that unless u get a stand alone info center and dont use the PCM at all.....

So if i trace the wire coming off of the alt it will lead to the cluster? What type of switched power source do you recomend?

Does anyone else agree with this guy? It seems like a logical idea. So all i need to do is run the wire from the back of the alternator to a switched source so that the alt has power with the guage cluster unhooked?

on my 93 the wire leads right into the cluster I pulled the wire out of C220 on mine and ran it to a switched source off the key.
