Default Cracking open switches and bezels, etc. – is there an easier way?

Don’t know if this is the right forum, but here goes…

It may sound dumb that I can’t figure out the proper way to get these things open, but I am admitting that I can’t. lol
Take for example these steering wheel radio controls.

I see that they have about four indents on the side that clip them into the housing.

Now… when I look at these triangle-shaped tabs I think, “okay, just grab a small flat head screwdriver, push it down, and they’ll come out.” This never works. All it ends up doing is grinding away at the tab and making it look like **** in the process. (I’d like there to be some tab left for when I go to put it back together.)

I am tempted to just yank on the front of the switch to pull them apart.

Someone has to know a trick to popping these things open....
