Default LS1 Coolant Temp

What wire on a LS1 F Car does the Colant Temp Gauge get it's signal from? I have it traced in the Harness from the Sensor, but which wire actually sends the Signal to the Gauge..how is the Gauge wired?

What year harness and sensor are you using, 98 is the only ect sensor that will run a gauge, 99 up are serial from the pcm.

Default Coolant temp sensor

Hi

Just get another sensor and screw it into the plugged port at the aft end of the RH head (LS1 LH head is "swung 180" and mounted on the RH). Then wire to your guage on the dash. The port is M12x1.5

We did this on our E30-LS1 swap. We had to drill & tap the existing port in the RH head for a BMW temp sensor (9/16-18 -- I thought those guys were metric) and then ran a wire to the dash guage. The existing sensor in the LH head still goes to the PCM, with no changes. This worked for us because our sensor is a 1-wire type that gets power from the dash and completes the electrical circuit by being grounded at the RH head.

If your sensor is a 2-wire type (power from battery source, thru sensor, to guage, then from guage to ground), just wire it like that.

I'd like to know too. I've been looking at wiring digrams but haven't found which wire connects the instrument panel to the PCM for temp. I plan to put on an extra sensor like everyone recommends but I still can help but wonder how the factory car was set up.

Anyone?

The factory temp gauge is fed by the PCM via serial data. There is no single specific wire set aside for the temp gauge, it is part of the class II serial data that is sent between the cluster and PCM/BCM.

Yea, I got another one and put it in the right side Head, wired it in the Harness. The only problem I see there is that it gets hot back there, real hot.. anyone think that it will throw the Gauge?

Just buy the 98 3 wire sensor and change the electrical connector. The green is for the gauge and the yellow and black provide the ect signal to the pcm.

Yeah they came on tons of cars with the 3 prong...2nd Gen S10's being the most likely. Both 2.2l and 4.3l used a 3 prong plug.

That's the in-line, and why don't you think it's goin to be accurate? The way I have it, it's goin to be surrounded by Coolant, and that Coolant comes hot out of the Engine..
