hey guys i have an 01 ss with a comp xr281 cam. i want to switch to to the ms3 but i dont know if that will require different pushrods. i have stock heads and my current cam is using 7.35s. will i need to switch to 7.4s?

Have you checked your pre-load with a dial indicator? If you're running stock heads, the 7.35s are probably too short for your current setup as it is. Unless your heads have been milled, you should be running 7.4's now.

im not too mechanically inclined when it comes to this stuff, i have other people do most of my engine work. i bought my current cam from a friend who ran this cam with stock heads and basically the same setup as me. he said something about base circle and preload which is why i needed the 7.35s instead. pretty sure he knew what he was talkin about, but hey you never know. But im still basically just trying to find out what length i need to run an ms3 with stock heads.

My understanding is aftermarket cams have a tad be smaller base circle. So if anything, you'd need longer than 7.4 inch pushrods (which are the stock size)....not shorter. I had the same problem with the car I just bought. Some 'pro' at a shop in PA thought 7.35's were the right length. I took it to my mechanic because I thought the engine was making a little too much noise. He checked the lifter pre-load using a dial & an adjustable pushrod length checker (pre-load should be .055~.060") and it was only .005". Then, he pulled the pushrods, measured 'em, and asked who was the jackass who thought 7.35's were a good idea (no offense to your friend). I now have 7.4's and it's a bit quieter. He thinks the remaining noise might be from the light pre-load allowing the lifters to 'chew up' the cam some. Let me just say I wasn't exactly thrilled to hear that news...
