Default Compressor surge - what is it and what are the results?

I recently discovered that the fluttering sound my setup was making was not the BOV, but was the compressor surging. I know what it sounds like and I know what causes it, but I'm looking for a good in-depth explanation of what exactly is happening when the turbo surges and what kind of damage it can cause.

Surge is basically, the turbo is putting out more air then the engine can consume at the rpm and pressure ratio at that point. As for what it can do, well it will destroy the turbo with time as it will jar the thrust bearing to death and can eventually if severe enough snap the shaft.
