Default AIR system, Explain Please

I know where the AIR system is located, but i was wondering what its function is. What does it do for the car and why do some people choose to remove it?

Default

Its function is to pump outside air directly into the exhaust manifolds. It basically performs this function right after startup. Supposedly, it helps the cats heat up quicker, and thus perform their emissions function quicker. Once the car is warmed up, it does nothing. People take it off because it removes some of the under-hood clutter, and saves a few pounds off the front end. Removing it or leaving it does not affect performance in any way.
