Default What gears do I have?

I got a complete rear axel from a friend who used to work at a Chevy dealer. It was removed from 2000 camaro. It only has 10k on it. He is giving this to me for it's scrap weight because he has has it for years and never sold it. My question is he believes it was in a v6 car. How do I tell what gears are in it? I was actually thinking about just swapping the whole unit if its 3.42's, I have 2.73's now. And don't forget I'm only paying about $40 for it! Thanks

Since you're getting it for cheap just pull the rear cover off and see what carrier/gears are in it - if it's been sitting for years you want to change the fluid anyway and check for any damage since it was removed at such low mileage.

It was removed because the kid said it was noisy. My buddy said he was crazy and after realigning the gears twice the service manager gave him a whole new rear end. I stole an axel out of it for my 99 firebird once before and it was identical inside as far as it a limited slip unit. Here's a pic

Count the teeth on the gears and do the math.
