What type of rear end would be best?

What type of rear end would be best? I am wandering what rear end and suspension would be the best and where would I go to find something that would fit under my car. I'm not sure if I should go with a ford 9 inch with maybe a 4-link, or something to keep the IRS setup that will not break under a hard load. My car is a 1992 BMW with stock IRS. As it sits, it is just fine, but I want to put slicks on the back and if I did, I'm not sure what would go first, the half shafts, or the diff.
