Default Need a GPS system....but it needs this specific feature

Here's the situation...

Trying to get my dad a GPS unit for Christmas. He wants one to do whatever, it doesn't need to do much. If it can get him from the garage to the mailbox it is doing too much. BUT my mom and I want to be able to locate his car if there is ever an emergency. He is diabetic, and it has been getting worse lately. SO, for us to be able to do that, what do we need to buy? I have searched all the features online for cheap-ish GPS units, but to no avail. What do we need to buy him to keep an eye when needed? Also, don't want to pay a monthly fee, but will do so if needed.

Thanks for any advice...

Jeremy

IIRC none of the regular retail units are capable of sending a signal back to the satellite in order to locate the unit. I think u will have to look at those specific systems that are used to track cars and you can see real time updates on a computer.

There are a few companies that make tracking units for cars available to the public. You could install it without him ever knowing it.

1. Buy a car with ONSTAR.
2. Get LOJACK installed.
3. Purchase a laptop instead + Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 + Lojack for Laptops

For the $ I did option 3. Why pay for a small handheld computer that is limited to GPS only functions for the same price? Make that $ stretch for Christmas!
