Default 2 channel Axle, 4 channel diff. Is it possible?

Can I put a 4 channel diff into a 2 channel housing? Will it be the same as the 3 channel to 4 channel swap? I have a automatic rear end with 3.42, and a non-LSD. I want to upgrade to the LSD from a 4 channel car.

those 2 wires sticking out of the top of your rear are the sensor for the 3 channel system. It senses rotation of the reluctor ring pressed onto the carrier.
