Default Crankcase Ventilation

I have a 2001 TA and the old LS1 had i K&N breather that someone had put into the oil fill neck. I am replacing this engine with an LS6 and I was wondering should I recreate this or should I just let it be and rely on the factory system which was also left in place. Any ideas as to why this was done in the first place also would be helpful as this is the first one I have seen like this. Basically the guy just drilled a hole in the fill neck and put a valve cover breater into this hole.

does the ls6 you are using come with the ls6 valley cover. if so i would use that and ditch the breather.
