Default Would a poorly grounded HU internal RCA cause this?

I get VERY minimal sound from my new HU out of the subwoofer pre-out. I'm positive all crossover settings/etc are correct, and with amother HU, the sub plays normal volume so the problem seems to be limited to the HU itself.

I know the HU I bought new has caused problems for others right out of the box with poorly grounded internal RCAs -- but usually that just leads to noise...

it is -- even at 0, I would imagine some sort of a response more than what I'm getting considering the range is -12 to +6, I believe. When I say I hardly get a response, I mean you have to touch the sub or rest your ear on it to hear anything.

I like how I've upgraded 100% of my system within the past 6 months and I continue to have problems.

trield old HU again to make sure I'm not crazy -- everything sounds perfect then... also tried using front RCAs on sub with the HPF off since I know those RCAs work perfectly fine for the components amp, but I got the same results.

I'm not sure what to do at this point..

That's what I was beginning to think, but I had similar results when using preouts known to work (fronts) and turning off all filters...

Anyways, it's a lot better now. I reset the HU, turned the sub pre-out up to its full outut, set all amp gains again, let the HU do it's AUTO EQ thing, and got much different (better) results than before.

No. Loosing ground only means you'll loose signal isolation and noise rejection abilities. I.E. you'll have alternator whine and other noise issues. Not a loss of sound. The signal traveling across the center conductor is AC so you won't loose sound, just the stuff above.
