popping out of carb while running
its a 350, carbed. It makes a loud popping sound, and the motor shakes each time it pops. The distributor is in tdc, plug wires are on in right order. I have turned it over and double checked abotu 10 times, each time O deg on balancer, rotor pointing to #1 plug and both valves closed on #1 compression stroke. If I go one tooth retard it wont start and one tooth advance it wont start, also 180 it wont start. I have put in lots of distributors and never had this happen.
I just bought this motor and apparently it had good compression and was runnign before pulled.
the rockers do sound loose, maybe they were messed with and one is too tight?
thanks, any replys are welcome I was up to 4am last night working on it

Could be many things.
Valves that aren't sealing. I'd do a compression (or leakdown if you can) test on all cylinders.
It's lean and the carb needs rejetted or repaired.
Weak valve springs.
Rockers are out of adjustment.
Cross firing between plug wires.
There are other things that could cause this as well, but those are the most likely and the ones I'd check first.

well i figured it out.
When I put the intake on I used bolts that were 1/4" too long and 2 of them hit the push rods, bending them. One rocker was sideways and one lifter was busted apart. oops
Today I got it back together and it runs good now. lesson learned
