I'd pull the heads and the oil pan for sure.

If you are going to invest the time to swap it out I'd have it checked out by a machine shop. It probobly wouldn't hurt to put new rings and berrings in it.

Wow can't go wrong with that! Deffinantly take it to a machine shop and have them check it out. If not; do a compression test, pull the oil pan, and I would pull the tappet covers at least just to have a look. Oh and a Gasket/Seal set obviously wouldn't be a bad idea as they can be a real p.i.t.a afterwords! Good Luck Bro!

have a machine shop look at it f-t-w,
What would you do to check this motor out????
if your asking that question, have a more mechanically inclined friend look at it with you. (not saying your not, dont take it the wrong way, but even if you are everyone has that one friend whos an engine GOD...bring him )
after that gaskets&seals, new rings and berrings like previously stated . after that, go nuts on it...500+ before the juice. jk, but seriously...
