Default K&N for Corvette.. HELP

I need to know thiS ASAP....

Just bought a K&N drop in filter for a stock 99 Corvette... The filter came with a little black seal that looks like it goes around the filter to seal it in the box better... well the seal isnt worth a **** and the filter seems to fit better in the box without it... Is this rubber seal needed? It seems almost impossible to get the filter to sit int here right with the seal around it....

Help quick...

its just to make it seal better, if you think it seals better without it then dont use it, i had to force mine down on my camaro, just because i didnt want anything to get through, but I am getting rid of my K&N, paper seems to be the better choice
