Default Need help deciding if a gear change will benefit me.

I have the 2.73's with mods below and I don't plan on adding any more power. Maybe headers and an ORY in the future but that's it. I don't drag the car but do a lot of canyon carving and highway racing type of stuff. generally races where I'm in the 25-120 range. Will gears help me go faster in that range and keep the car in the power band more. I want to get rid of some of that lag I get after the shift but don't want a stall to do it.

In all honesty..since you like carving corners and highway runs with the car..your best bet is a 6 speed conversion.

Back to the original question, I think gears would help you out so long as you didn't go too extreme and totally kill your top speed. If your racing and shutting down at 120 always..3.73's oughta work..or you could go to 3.42's maybe so your top speed doesnt take as big of a hit. If I were you, I'd just play around with a gear calculator and find a good middle ground where your acceleration improves and your top speed is still acceptable to you.

I've been holding out doing anything much to my car over the winter because I've been considering a little bit the idea of swapping it for a 6 speed once it gets warm. I'll have to do some research on a conversion, I never really considered that.

just try a mild 3k stall dude. trust me, it's sooo worth it. it will be very streetable. i drive a high 3k (3800ish) stall right now every day and it's not that bad. i see 2k rpm when accelerating around town (up to 40) getting on the hwy i'll see 3k rpm for a second or two till i get up to speed for it to lock in, then it's done. i really have to try to get it above 3200 from a stand still..

in regards to your question though, i went from 2.73's to 3.42's and it helped alot all around. third gear tops out now in the mid 130's. that's plenty fast for me. i like that ratio. i think 3.73's would have been too much for me.

I think a conversion is out. That's a lot more money than I want to spend.
