Default fuel pump qustion

I have a 1989 camaro rs convertable with a 305. It needs a fuel pump. My question is how is it done? The pump is in the gas tank. Do I need to take the muffler off to get to the gas tank or should I just cut a hole in the floor to access the tank. Thanks for any help I my get.

this is LS1 tech. you have an '89.

anyway.. you need to drop the tank.. so yes the muffler comes down.

the access to the pump is through the top of the tank.

Well, DONT HACK IT UP! That is stupid, just do it right, cut tyhe muffler off and disconnect the shocks to let the rearend down, when the tank starts to come out spin the rear od the tank down and it will come right out, spin it is the way it came out and it is a breeze as long as bolts dont breal from rust.

You have to take the exhaust off, but if your car is as rotted as mine was and you can't unbolt the rear end, you can still drop the tank it just takes some playing with it and turning it. Make sure there is little or no gas in it when you do this. Gas weighs approx. 7 lbs per gallon so you do the math. It gets heavy real fast.
