t56 lost every gear but 4th last night
Like the title says I was on my way to my mother in laws last night on the Highway driving at about 80mph on I-95 with the cruise control on and the my engine started to free wheel just like if you were to push in the clutch. Every gear but 4th is now gone I can shift in to every gear without pressing in the clutch with the engine running except 4th which is still there. Any ideas what broke inside the transmission so I can guage whether or not to replace a part or buy a new transmission.

Might have broken a mainshaft. I would definately fix what you got it will still be cheaper than buying a new one.
A tear down & inspection will be the sure deciding factor to determain what you need.

Tear down is needed....
4th would be you input shaft and that meshes with your countershaft but it would still need your mainshaft to turn your driveshaft. Possibly the forks broke? Shift lug?

Tore down the trans last night the input shaft striped (not at the spline) . Not sure why it stripped oil level was good and was changed for the 4th time about 13,000 miles ago. There is a lot of metal in the casing/oil from the gear that went so I am pretty sure the transmission is destend for the garbage can. The shafts are still good but I dont take any stock in the gears/ bearings that are left since it all seems to have excessive play. I haven't broken out the micrometer but I need a better book with those specs to see if it is still worth saving. Another note the transmission has 103k on it now and is/was the last original part of the Trans Ams drivetrain. I think it has lived a good life especially since it has had 540rwhp at it the last 13k and about 410rwhp since 45k. Any suggestions. Rebuild or Hunt down a low miles used one? Thanks for the info above much appreciated
