Default LQ9 4L80E intermitent noise

I am trying to determine the cause of an intermittent squealing/scraping noise coming from the flexplate/converter area of an LQ9 4L80E installed in a fiberglass hot rod. The noise comes and goes but is noticeably worse after the engine is warmed up or after hard acceleration. There is no evidence of anything rubbing together.

I unbolted the converter from the flexplate. The converter rotates fine although there is only about 1/32 to 1/16 inch freeplay between the converter and flexplate. Other than the noise the truck runs and shifts fine. Any ideas on what would cause this or anything else I could check?

Pulling the engine on this thing would be absolute Hell, don't make me do it!

Thanks for any help you can offer.

The only thing I can think of would be the inner pump gear rubbing on the crescent or possibly a pump bushing that is toast. Not sure but let us know what you find. Vince
