Default Cars Idling, up and down.

After cleaning my maf, my car has been acting funny, terrible idle, won't hold at 900 like it used to. Car idles from 1100, and goes up to 1500, and back and forth like a yo yo. Car also backfires when shifting under WOT. Anybody have any ideas on whats causing this problem? Oh and sometimes while its idling at 900, itll dip to like 800 and sound cammed and a really strong gas smell comes from the pipes. Anybody, please help I've been fighting with this problem for a bit.

Most likely (as one said above) look for air that is getting into the intake w/o going thru the MAF. This is called unmetered air or a vacuum leak. Check around the TB, maybe a hose has come off. One good technique that works for me is to turn on a Benzomatic gas cylinder (do not lite it!) and run the tip around the TB, rubber connectors, and around the intake.

BTW: did you clean the air filter also? If you have a K&N or similar product, the oil that you put on it after cleaning it, will end up on the MAF wires. This will screw up your idle speed big time.
