I'm installing the timing cover seal for my 98 vette. Any suggestions before I start. The service manual says to coat the outer part of the seal with oil as well as the seal bore. Does this sound correct? I would think that I wouldn't want to do this. It appears as if the seal outer surface is rubber.

That applies to the older style seal that had a metal housing. I use a thin coat of GM Assembly Adhesive on the all rubber seal as they have been known to come out when installed dry. Definately do not use oil on the rubber one.

I have installed several dry, the new ones press in with your fingers. No issues.

Just make sure you use a lil RTV on the corners. a Dab will do. this will prevent any possibilities of oil leaks where the cover mates to the oil pan.
