Transmission no worky in D or 3.

Is there anything that would cause my tranny to all of the sudden not go into drive or 3rd. I have to put it in 1st or second to even get it to move. It didn't give any indications it was going bad either. Really weird

it happened to mine and
it turned out to be a bad solenoid.
it would do it off and on, once it got hot it would get stuck closed/open
and the car would limp in 3rd gear.

is it throwing any codes?
