Default Rotating Crank Pulley Question...

Well I got the engine out of my car but had left the my 6 speed tranny in neutral instead of putting it in a gear. Now my crank spins freely on itself. Is there a way to get the crank pulley off now and keep it from spinning freely on itself so I can get the bolt off? I don't have an air gun either...

thanks

hmmm any chance you have a drive shaft yoke sitting around? Or maybe stick the whole driveshaft back on the trani, have someone hold it, and go at the crank bolt with an impact gun.

Or is there a legitimate and safe way to jam the flywheel? Maybe through the starter?

I just made the same mistake a couple weeks ago. With my engine on a stand, I threaded a bolt into the crank where the flywheel bolts up and cranked it against the arms of the engine stand. I used a bolt soft enough not to hurt the crank, but sturdy enough to not break. It work very well and didn't hurt the crank at all. Don't use a bolt your going to need later, it will bend the hell out of it.

Would a chain wrench or a flywheel locking type tool do the trick as well?

A flywheel tool would work, Autozone probably rents them for free too. Putting the tranny in gear and using the driveshaft sounds like a pretty quick and easy fix as well.

How'd ya make out?

Another idea I heard was to click the frigging starter while you undo the bolt. Sounds crazy. Try this at your own risk

There are tools that you insert into the pulley/balancer to hold it in place why you break free the balancer bolt. A flywheel tool will also work. Get a extra set of hands to help

Summitracing sells one. #SME-906008

I had used a another brand one once and it did work. suggest using 3' - 4' cheater bars to help.
