Default Smog legal exhaust in Northern California

Is there any way to replace my stock manifolds with something that flows and sounds better than stock? Do I have to get shorty or mid-length headers if I want to pass or can I pass with long tubes? Hi-Flow cats as well? Any advice is welcome thanks.

So what combination of parts should I be looking to purchase? I was looking at Sanderson Shorty Headers do I change cats and a bigger y-pipe? how much different will the car sound once the shorties are installed?

You can't move the cats out of the stock location or they are considered illegal. So Longtubes are out of the questions.

If you are going to stay smog legal atleast get mid lengths. If I were you I'd do an o/r y and a catback with a cutout....actually I'd just pay someone to smog my car, but thats just me....

Staying smog legal and making power are counter productive....

Right now I have flowmaster and a lid. The car is a daily driver and I want more power reliably. If long tubes are the only way what setup would you recommends and is there a reputable shop that installs in northern Cailfornia (near Sacramento) anyone advises? I know this has probably been posted many times, I have been unable to locate the correct threads if you could point me in the right direction that would be cool too.

The only thing that you can replace the stock manifolds with are CARB approved shorty headers(as far as I know no mids), and as far as cats ONLY stock cats will pass visual inspection. I went with high flow cats so I still have them when and If Im pulled over(1000+ dollar ticket for running with no cats) and have resinged myself to putting the stock stuff on for inspection. You could just register your car in another state, If long tubes are a must...
