Default '70 chevelle 5.3L swap

ive been talking to my dad about this and he seems interested but he said it wouldnt be for a while cause he has another project he needs to finish first ('69 MG midget convertible) but i decided i'd figure everything out before hnd to make it go as smooth as possible.... so here is a little history on my car

1970 4dr chevelle malibu we purchased when i was 14 for my first car we pulld the tired and worn out 307ci sbc and did a rebuild aswell as added a nice cam and heads with an intake and LT's with glasspacks and installed a B&M shift kit in the TH350 and buttoned it all up and dropped it back in with a holley 650 sitting right on top to help with my wonderful gas mileage (about 8 with my foot in it and 14 without lol)

so here is the motor ive picked out and the mods ive chosen to help pursuede the 4000lb beast into much better gas mileage and most importantly more power!

with these mods what kind of power would i be looking at on E85 and pump gas (87)?

5.3L L59
LS1 intake or stock 5.3 truck intake
jantzer Poted TB
custom CAI
zo6 cam (204/218 .550/.550 116 lsa)
ebay special LT's with H and dynomax race bullets
bigger injectors
tuned pcm
speedway motors th350 to ls1 kit
2700-3000 stall jegs street performance converter
th350 with B&M shift kit

im hoping for around 350hp-375hp 350tq-400tq

and i also plan to swap in some 3.73 gears and posi or a mini spool in my 10 bolt

but i have a few questions about the swap...

will a TH350 bolt right up to the block?
i will need a electronic fuel pump and system wont i?
how big of injectors will i need with the mods above?

im sure i'll think of something else to ask but any help is appriciated

here are a few pictures of it

engine before rebuild

engine during

engine after

The 350 will bolt up to it. I just purchased a few motors and a 5.3 was in the pile other than the bore it appears to be the same as the 5.7's

For the Z06 cam, suggest you put in the matching valve springs and retainers.. or go to Comps 918's.

As far as the injectors, with the mild Z06 cam, Stock 22# or maybe up to 28# would seem to be about the correct size.

The 5.3L will bolt to the TH350 but you will need the GM flywheel spacer that was used with the 6.0L motors that had a 4l80e behind them. Or you can get a torque convertor with a LS1 nose on it.

You will need an electric fuel pump. It is best of you have a baffle system in the tank. One option is an 9?4 to 96 caprice/impala tank, or you can stick a 99-02 camaro/firebird sending unit/pump assembly in your tank. You can also run an inline pump, but then you have to keep the fuel level higher to avoid starvation when cornering/hard braking

For the power numbers you posted are you talking flywheel power? The z06 cam , LS1 intake and headers aren't going to be anywhere near 350-375 at the wheels.... If that is what you are looking to achieve, I would look into a much more aggressive cam and milling the heads with a little port work. That would get you much closer but still a stretch if you are looking for 375 at the ground. Flywheel is probably close tho.

Are you still required to smog the car where you live? If not, I'd definitely go with a more aggressive cam. The 5.3's make very good power without braking the bank.

Just my thoughts.

yes i was talking flywheel lol but i have seen one dyno test where a 5.3 wiht an Ls1 intake a Z06 cam and ebay long tubes made 326rwhp so i think with a ported throttle body, 28# injectors and a decent tune it will be around 340 or so

and where i live my car deosnt have to pass emissions but i dont really want to bump up the cam cause i still want decent gas milage (and not to mention i dont have $400 laying around to shell out for the cam)

If fuel mileage is a consideration as you say, I would use an overdrive transmission instead of the T350. Especially with the 3.73 gears. I have 3.80 gears in mine with the 4L60E and it cruises at 65 at 2100 RPM. With your set up you would be close to 2900-3000 RPM at 65 depending on tire size.

good luck with your project

Pat
