Default check gauge light/loss of power steering, help!

i was leaving work today, and sitting at a light waiting to take a left. when it turned green and i was about halfway through the turn my steering wheel wouldn't move any further to the left, almost as if my power steering had turned off. i could still give it gas and move forward, but it didn't want to turn. i looked at my dash and the red "check guages light" had turned on (this was all in the middle of an intersection). i turned my car off and then back on real quick and the problem seemed to go away. i drove home about a 15 mile trip and the problem didn't seem to re-occur. any ideas what happened?
