adjust the horseshoe shaped end togher to fit the valve spring retainer...then adjust the cup shaped end up to about and inch from the valve that your about to remove the compress the handle...remove the keeper...careful not to let the compressor to slip or move around...if it does...you will be chasing retainers and locks for an hours...good luck...compressores really ar'nt designed to compress the little retainers on the ls1's

If you buy the plate style spring compressor it will be a walk in the park. You can get them from NAPA for 15 bucks. You basically just screw it into the rocker arm hole and it cranks any size spring down (big, little and doubles). You may want to lightly tap the retainer as you drive it down to get the keepers to pop out. Here's a few pictures of the compressor that I use:

Thanks guys, I got it done but I rented a crappy compressor and now my hands hurt like a biatch. The only tuff part was trying to balance the head with my foot as I lined up the U shaped holder on the retainer and the other end in the center of the valve and then trying to get leverage to push the handle down w/o losing the angle I wanted. Sure wish I had some kind of clamp to get the heads to stay put, oh well.
