Fuel gauge not working

Fuel gauge not working put in a new fuel pump, but could not use the stock 4 prong connector. I had used a generic connector. Hooked the wires up, the two for the float resistor, ground, and power. Pump works, but the gauge does now. I swapped wires around and nothing. . .
