Default back firing problem

i have a 96 formula M6. at idle and when the rpm's are rising everything sounds and feels normal but when i let off the gas while still in gear it back fires until it comes down to idle. it sounds like someone is lighting a pack of firecrackers that wont quit till idle. does anyone have an idea as to what is wrong and should be fixed?

when i bought the car the cat-back looks like its been home made. i mean once the pipe comes over the rear end, the pipe forks. so it comes straight out the right tips and on the other direction it goes through a glass pack then out the left.
