Ford 9 inch - Can I use one from an older car?
I am looking to find a bargain 9 inch. I have seen plenty of them on craigslist that are form older car such as this one http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/pts/848750532.html Can you use one from an older car. Can you use an older housing and just replace the axles and internals? Any info that could help me would be awesome. My rear end is bad and I can only afford to drop about 1000 bucks for a 9 inch. Can I find a good used one for that price or piece one together for that?

You can use one from an older vehicle, but your gonna have to do some fabbing to get it to work. If anything I would go with a 8.8 then just transfer the brackets from your rear to that one since their close to the same width as the 10 bolt and are also pretty solid. The 9inch would be the way to go if you had the money, but I would consider the 8.8 as a close contender and they can be picked up pretty cheap as well. JMHO

I just need something cheap that I can put on my car that will handle hard launches at the track. I don't care if it is a dana 60, 12 bolt or 9 inch. I have an 00 WS6 M6 full bolt on and cammed soon. Anyone have any idea of what I can get for around the 1000 mark? I know I want to go 4.10's or 4.11's

If anything save/borrow an extra $300 and order an axle kit from EPP for about $1100 then go to the junkyard and get a center section for about $70 then whatever the cost of new bearings, gasket, and fluid for the center. That set up will support 380-420hp for a fact at 5500 clutch dumps.

We just finished a swap for a customer that wanted to take the "cheap" route. We tried to talk them into purchasing the correct housing and associated parts. He was determined to use the cheap housing he had.
The end result was an old housing that cost way more than a new setup. I would not do this. Unless you are a very good fabricator it will cost more in the long run.
