Default Switching Gears from 3.8 V6 to Z28

Hi, I am posting from France, I ll try to get understood but please be helpfull and use easy vocabulary when replying.

My first US car was a 1999 V6 Camaro A4, but since I enjoyed the experience, I finally purchased a 2000 Z28 A4.

What I am thinking to do is the following thing, and that is what I would like to know if it is possible or not :

I wanted to change gear in my Z28, to shift from the stock 2.73 (GU2 code in the door) to 3.42. But since it has a carrier 2, I also had to change diferential.

My V6 1999 3.8 Camaro has GU6 in the door, thus I believe it is a 3.42 with carrier 3 differential.

WHAT I WAS THININK TO PLAN IS THE FOLLOWING :

1/ I order a 3.73 Motive Thick gear, suitable for Carrier 2 differential + 2 install kits.

2/ I take off the 2.73 gear + the differential (2 carrier series) from my Z28, and I install instead the carrier3 differential + gear 3.42 from my 3.8 V6 1999 Camaro (it has GU6 code inside the door, so I assume it is a 3 series Carrier + 3.42 gear) : will this stuff from my V6 1999 camaro fit the z28 ???

3/ Then, in the V6 Camaro, I install the carrier 2 differential from the z28, with the 3.73 thick gear I plan to purchase (will this also fit in the 3.8 V6 1999 Camaro ?)

FINALLY, I would end up with a z28 with carrier 3 + 3.42 gear (what I wanted)
and a V6 3.8 Camaro with a carrier 2 + 3.73 gear which would be nice for a less powerfull engine.

Can you tell me your thought about all this please ?
Thanks. Eric.

Your plan sounds good, although a 3.73 gear in a V6 won't do too much for you so it may be a waste of time. I would just swap the rear ends over between cars (they will bolt right up) and consider it done.

The other consideration is the V6 rear is normally an open diff. Perhaps the Euro spec was different and you actually got a Posi in yours? But I would be 100% sure before moving it to the Z28.

As the other person says bolting up the entire assembly would be the easiest assuming its posi.

As for 3.73's in the V6...I think it might rev too high. I bolted 3.42 rear out of a 98 TransAm into the 96 V6 Camaro and everything worked fine but it was a 5 speed. It made a bit of difference in the low end mid range (but not earth shattering), but in 5th gear on highway it reved about 5-600 rpms higher.

I think its a lot of work to go thru swapping gears just to get what you want, I would look for the option of swapping in a rear to the Z28, and then go looking for a replacement for the V6 assuming you neeed to keep it running and its not just the donar car.

Good luck or should I say Bonne Chance !

Thanks for your answers guys.

"Are they both ABS 3 channel,TC 4 channel,or one of each?"
They are both TC 4 channels.

"The other consideration is the V6 rear is normally an open diff. Perhaps the Euro spec was different and you actually got a Posi in yours? But I would be 100% sure before moving it to the Z28."
I think euro models all have posi inside, but I should check

I gave a call to a french guy who has a 3.73 inside his Z28 A4 : he says it is just great, and I should not care about the V6 and just plot in my z28 the thick 3.73 from motive. He is very seduced with his setup.

What I was considering with a 3.73 in the z28 was that the top speed would be very reduced : the man I called says he can reach 155mph.
Some of you who have a 3.73 inside a Z28 A4 could tell me what top speed they are able to reach ?
And do you believe I will experience a tremendous loss of gas mileage in changing from 2.73 to 3.73 ?

I went from 273 open to 373 posi in my old third gen formula, and i still got good gas mileage, although my top end was down slightly. I would go for the 3.73 and not think twice.
