I agree with Mikey. I know why you would want to do that (because you already have the engine) but I think it will take away from even having a Z06. Part of the attraction of those cars is the engine. Amongst other things you'll have to change since you're pretty much taking a step backwards in time (Gen III to Gen II). I'd pick a C4 and put it in there if you're that set on putting it in a vette. Just my .02

I can imagine the reason you are asking is because you can get the C5 car without the motor.
It can be done but based on the times of your 396LT1 the LS6 motor with just headers should be faster. I'd look to put an LS motor in the car for not only the resale value but the fact that it can be made much faster than the LT1 with less headaches trying to figure out all of the wiring for the BCM to make all of the guages work properly not to mention cruise control etc.
