In the market for an 06-07 monte ss
I'm looking around the market to find a nice 06-07 ss monte carlo and was wanting to know if there was anything to look out for when test driving or inspecting the vehicle. Are there any problems that seem to be common to this body style/drivetrain? I've read around this forum and others and most people seem to be happy with the car. The only negatives I've seen so far are problems with the transmission, but that seems to be only the gxp grand prix's. thanks for the help.

Same motor and trans so the Montes have the problems too.

All W-Bodys have trans issues thats the nature of the beast from 88
Grand Prix to the New ones. I know from experince my Grand Prix has had 5
trannys because they didn't know what they were doing.
But I have a life time warranty on it now, and I have had no problems in 5 years.
My SS no issues yet

Trannys are crap, but obviously not everyones is going to go. More will be just fine than will break. ISS will most likely need to be replaced. Those are the only 2 major things really. No car is perfect don't let a few negatives steer you away. No matter what car you have there are common problems. I've had mine for 2 years and 23k miles so far and only problem I have had was needing the ISS replaced. If you want an all out performance vehicle you should probably look elsewhere. But if you want a good DD that's got some ***** then it suits the bill just fine.

I know mike but its ok haters hope to keep it like that.
But the Grand Prix has the miles but only 1 continuous problem the tranny
up to 5 years ago when the problem was finally fixed. That was the main problem except for the famous GM alternator.

Here let's put it like this, since you are looking into a used Monte there is a very good chance that some or most of the issues that we have had, are already fixxed! My best advise to you is, if and when you find what you think is the right car to buy, get the VIN and take it to the dealer you will use for either warrenty work or maintanace. Have them do a search to see what has been done, then ask US again to see what will likely be the next problem. The trans on these cars are hit or miss, you really can't make a decision on one or two persons issues, I have over 34K miles on my trans, I did do a filter and shift kit on it at 30K miles. But either way try to get a GM certified used car like I did. It will net you a 100K mile powertrain warrenty!

The 06 impala ss i just sold had 36k and the trans would slip 50% of the time in the 1-2 shift. Thank God it held up and i got away with a $1500 rebuild. Now it someone else's problem.
When i would turn the headlamps on, sometimes only 1 would come on and i would have to turn off then turn on. They would flicker for a sec or too as well.
The Bose radio has an audible hissing sound.
torquey v8 and fwd dont mix. get a turbo 4 cylinder instead. better choice IMO.

wow, this doesnt sound very promising. this will be used as a DD and will be female driven. we have looked at one locally, it is a 06 with 11k miles so I dont know if all the problems have been worked out. more than likely, they are just about to begin. also noticed that the front tires have about half the tread depth as the rear tires, which means only one thing, burnouts or at least a lot of spinning. that doesnt vote too well for the trans. I think we'll wait. i have also been looking at the g8 gt's, but there's a good $8000-$9000 difference between the two cars. i appreciate the honest responses and help.

The tire wear is probably due to not rotating them. Is the car at a GM dealer? If so ask them to pull the warranty repair history. Chances are in the 11K miles, that there wasn't to many issues noticed since it wasn't driven on long trips.

that's true, but you think there would be that much difference in the tread depth from just normal wear? I've never really paid that much attention to a front wheel drive car so I just though it was from someone having a little too much fun, especially for the miles. No, unfortunately its at a Ford dealership.

If its nice and the price is right, see about their extended warrenty packages, get them to put new tires on it and a 4 wheel alignment.
IT is a BUYERS market, they will do just about anything to make a sale!
