Default Cam retaining plate?

Buddy of mine has a 383 Lt1 that has a cracked cam retaining plate. He said the parts stores don't list it and he hasn't check with a stealership yet.
The motor was running and he put over 2000 miles on it then it started making a tapping sound that we traced to the timing cover. What would cause this? I've never heard of it happening before.

Was the crank gear farther forward then the cam gear on the timing set? Thats the only thing I could think of that can effect cam endplay to that degree. It will literally pull the cam forward, and they must be perfectly level.

I've got a spare retaining plate he can have just for shipping if ya need it.

It should only be a few bucks at the dealer. Make sure he checks his cam end play when it goes back together. If he doesn't find out what caused it, it may just happen again.
