Default Alternator not charging battery ???

Hey guys I am alittle confused and need some help. I just did an alternator relocation and now my alternator is not charging to battery.I have done A search and have found that the exciter wire is sapossed to have 12 volt going to it to tell the alternator to start charging the system, is this correct? The exciter wire only has like 10 volt coming out of it. If this is correct can I basically run a switched 12 volt to the alternator to get it to charge And call it good? For whatever it worth I have relocated the battery to the trunk and it has been this way for about a year.

how did you do the alternator relocate? Did you use a modified stock bracket? Is it painted or powder coated?

Reason I ask is because I had mine powder coated and it would not charge becausde the alt was no longer grounded.... I added a grounding strap to the alt and it works great...

there is a spot on the back of the alternator you can screw a bolt in.....Just put a ground strap on that and run it to the frame... Should fix your prob...

I'm sure it doesn't make a difference but I should be ok to go from the alternator to the cylinder head ?

ok this is ironic......i just did the same and im having an issue and literally just got off the phone with painless performance with the solution about 3 minutes ago lol........i did the speed inc relocation with the ls1 alternator.....
apparently if you use the painless 30507 pigtail kit you need to hook up both wires from the pigtail.....the brown wire gets the resistor in series with it then you tie that to the pink wire and connect both of those to your exciter wire out of the harness. I dont know if you did this too but thats ur problem if you didnt' do that. If not check the ground from the alternator to the battery post you should have 0 ohms.

I had the same issue with my powder coated Speed Inc relo kit, So have a few other ppl. It's a pretty simple problem but to figure out, but it took a while for it to click in my head. Speed Inc should really tell people this when they send them a powder coated kit just to save their customers the headache.

I did this aswell, I was to lazy to take the bracket off and scrape off all the powder coat in the mounting areas.

what about the bolt though? the bolt isn't powder coated and it touches the case of the alternator and the engine block??

This is ahold point. I wonder if that might not be a good enough connection?

I'm not sure how the speed inc ls1 alternator set up is like. If you unsure that your getting a good ground, get a set of jumper cables only using one lead on them and clamp one end on the alternator and the other end on a shock tower stud or whatever ground you choose. Now check to see if your alternator is charging. thats just a quick way to check if you have a ground issue.

Hope this all makes sense.

You can just quickly make or buy a small ground cable. Bolt it to the back of the alternator case and then to somewhere on the body. If you choose to do this make sure your ground connections are clean and making good metal to metal contact.

I would use a pretty good size wire to ground it....I tried a little one and it got pretty hot....

I made my own relocate bracket for mine and had it powder coated and chased this prob on my car for a week and a half and went through 3 alternators... then all the sudden it clicked that I needed a ground...

The mounting bolts are not enough to ground it....

I would be willing to put money on it that this fixes it!

Let us know either way I am curious..

Matt, I see you relocated your hood release cable Did you need a longer cable? I'm guessing you just routed it through the wheel well?

I'm not sure sounds a bit small to me. I used a 4awg Welding cable to the frame rail.
