Default Have to remove heads, so can I reuse new head gaskets after I just torqued them down

Long story short, I just torqued my new heads and new felpro 1074 gaskets down yesterday with arp studs, but now I need to pull the heads back off to check something. Am I going to be able to reuse these head gaskets and arp studs?

I dont see why not? Aslong as the head gaskets in good shape, there shouldnt be any problems with it. the studs are just studs... aslong as there arent any threads missing, youll be fine

Do not reuse them. Gaskets seal by crushing. Once they are compressed and conform to the heads/block, they're done. Two things you shouldn't reuse are condoms and head gaskets.

NO do NOT reuse the head gasket....Once they have been torqued that is it...

ARP studs however can be used over and over....

I have heard that it is okay to use the MLS style head gaskets, but I never have and I'd be afraid to risk it. It's just not worth the small price of new ones.

They haven't gone through any heat cycles yet. I would reuse them. How do you think shops check ptv clearance? They use the exact parts going into a build and torque the heads down to measure the clearance. Then they unbolt them and check.

I'd be surprised if you could even remove them without damaging them.

As long as they don't tear when you remove them I wouldn't be afraid to reuse them. The motor has not been fired and they have only been on a couple days.

Regardless if it's ok or a bad idea, it will always be in the back of your mind, that alone is reason to get a new gasket.

I decided to check my PVC and used my gaskets. I called Lloyd to make sure it would be ok first. He said as long as I hadnt run the car it would be fine. Like Jolster said thats what shops do to check PVC.

On a paper gasket like a 1074 it will be fine.

On something like a Mr Gasket 5716, Victor Reinz, stock replacement Felpro, etc (graphite sheet) once you bolt it on the material from both sides of the steel shim will come off. One side sticks to the head and the other to the block.

Same deal with MLS gaskets, the sealing adhesive will stick to the block and heads.

I always used old used gaskets (of the targeted compressed thickness) for checking ptv clearance. I never knew anyone used new ones. I'm not trying to say they don't/shouldn't....just didn't know.
