Default 96 lt1 MAF Issue?

Recently purchased a 96 lt1 t/a. It is mostly stock other than cai. It was supposed to have a new(er) MAF put on it. Any ways when its running it stuggles to idle and tries to die. When i unplug the MAF it idles up to 850-900 and holds steady and sounds normal. When i plug it back in, it will idle for like 5 seconds and then cut off, but will crank back easily. If this MAF was put on used from an obd1 car it would matter right? Because im not sure. Anyways any suggestions as to what i can do or what the problem is(remember im assuming MAF)

First thing to check is to make sure the rubber elbow is on the throttle body properly and no folded under or torn. Seen that many times and then it will be getting air that the MAF didn't see and the pcm doesn't fuel for. The MAF's were the same from 94-02 on the fbody. No codes?
