Default Alternator solution for tall valve covers

I have these valve covers on my 383:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRO-141-131/?rtype=10

I thought I would just have to grind the little ear off the back of the alternator to get it to fit, but I actually had to grind a ton off the case. It worked for a little while, but I was afraid that it would kill my alternator and sure enough it did.

So what can I do to get the alternator to fit? Are there are that have a smaller case? Or any kind of way to relocate the alternator a little higher? Keep in mind I don't want to ditch my AC and I can't use the madman kit because I'm going to have a supercharger. I also don't want to use different valve covers if I can help it.

I had a guy come in wit those exact valve cover a year or so ago now. I noticed the valve cover where the alternator would be and welded in a small piece of aluminum angle iron. It worked out quite well

Yeah that was getting to be my idea too. Too bad you're in NY. Should any welding place be able to do that?

I swapped in the small case CS130 alternator from the stock CS144. I did also have the valvecover modified to fit. I'll get the pics up tomorrow.

Loosening the alt casing bolts and rotating them slightly also helps from what I here. I have the same covers and only ground on the alt and they fit fine. There may be a difference in alt from 93-95 though.

Have those on my dads 95 and we just grinded the alt ear down and they fit no problem and so far no issues.

I'm not sure what the deal with my alt was then - because like I said just grinding the ear was not even close to enough. I had to grind like 5% of the case off

I got the accesory bracket kit from SpeedInc which moves the alt to the drivers side lower so I can use any valvecover I want.

I have the same, v/c's and just ground a little off with my dremel. Fit's great and has no issues. I think I spent maybe 10 min. doing it too. Just get a new alt and try again, would be my suggestion.

So here is what I did. Also shaved about 5 lbs off the front of the car.

Sorry for it being so dirty.

I did the same thing, however, over time, I found that those VCs would't hold tension on the gaskets, and start seeping oil. I'd snug them, they'd loosen. I'd snug them, they'd loosen. After a while, I noticed that the tops were "sagging", since they don't have any internal bracing......

some have just "clocked" the rear of the alternator to clear. un-bolt the case and spin it so the recessed part allows the VC clearance

Are you having any electrical issues being that you lose about 30 amps? Do you have an electric water pump?

Edit: just realized this is a 3 year old thread....
