Default Head Gaskets for High Compression/nitrous

Just curious as to what you guys are using on your higher compression nitrous motors. I didnt think the Mr G. 5716s are up to the task for a 12.4:1+ motor with a 300 shot so I ordered some Cometic .036s. I thought about the 1074s but wanted a thinner gasket.

BadBlackZee is running the Cometics (.030 IIRC with pistons .002 in the hole) for his nearly 13:1 LT1 that will see nitrous. They were recommended to him by his builder.

Cometic MLS gaskets are your best answer. You just have to make absolutely sure the head and deck surfaces are indeed true. If they are, it is just short of welding the head onto the block.

Cometic MLS 5646-036 seem to work great. Never seen a failure.

I ran them on my motor for three years. I had to replace them because they started seeping coolant. I blame that on the engine sometimes sitting for long periods of time not being started.

Sounds good. Do you guys really think head studs are the way to go over bolts?

Cometics here as well.

Both the block and head surface need to be DEAD NUTS SMOOTH. Before you bolt them on have them checked. Cometic will recommend a certain minimum roughness factor.

As many have already said, if BOTH surfaces are true and flat then cosmetics should work just fine. But alot more comes into play with head gaskets, like proper TQ of bolts or studs and making sure the head does not scuff or damage the gasket when there installed.

Def run studs... They are cheap insurance for you new head gaskets. Besides the proper torque across all areas of the head will ensure that an excellent seal will be maintained.

While mating surface flatness is important, Cometics need a surface finish of 50RA or better in order to seal properly.

What he said is very important.

I also run the cometics and you know how much cylinder pressure I am pushing!

I've pondered this since I built my current setup and thought you could do that but how to get a grip on the studs to back them out? 2 nuts short enough in height to bind together to use as a bolt head of sorts? Don't want to use vise-grips.

Anyways I concluded that I'd likely also want to do other things that are made easier by having the whole engine out if I was going to pull the heads...

ARP studs made in this millenium have an allen in the stud to screw them in and out with so, studs are an absolute no brainer.

Cometic gaskets are as well. Just make sure the mating surfaces are smooth enough that you can't feel the cuts from the mill when you run your fingernail over them.
