Default Oil pump drive. Stock vs aftermarket

How many guys are running this?

I have heard the stock plastic one is junk.

Where can I get a new gear and shaft? I know I need to match the same material as the cam. I have a LE cam which is comp.

https://www.herronperformance.com/st...&productId=317

Thanks!

Yes^^^ he does, I run that too.. Way better bang for your $15 bucks.. Is purpose is to spread the load of the bolt evenly on gear housing and eliminate the possibility of the bolt ear snapping off..

17/18 page

Basically same issue that was already posted up a fee. The plastic is weak where it bolts to the block.

The plastic isn't weak, people are just ham fisted, and then there were a bunch of folks getting cheap cams with the wrong gears.

A retainer like wicked made is certainly a reasonable bit of insurance but anything more is just throwing money away that could have made a difference elsewhere.

Thanks everyone! I'm glad I posted this up vs diving in and buying that aluminum one.

On a side note. Are stock bolts sufficient for the oil pan? Mine are all greasy. I suppose I could clean them up. I guess I'm just trying to blow money.

Thanks again!!

I stole a deap pan out of the kitchen and just fill it with a little gas and dump all by bolts in it and use an old paint brush to agitate them. Only takes a few min and works like a charm. Wife still hasn't noticed it's missing lol.

When I went with a Brett Bauer cam (back bout 5 years ago N/A 383 LT1), I used a brass cam gear drive, worked fine. Forget who made it. But the stock one was not going to cut it for the blanks he used (which was a comp cam as well).

Just my exp.

That means he sold you a cam with the wrong gear, no reason to use a bronze gear on one of these other than wrong gear on the cam.

Well personally lots of guys hear say don't waste your money on the Herron billet aluminum housing, but there are documented cases of the stock one breaking and when it does you'll instantly lose oil pressure and then your engine is done. Spun bearings at the least and total destruction at the worst, I don't know about the rest of you guys but I look at it as cheap insurance for my expensive new engine.

Outta the 100's of thousands of lt.'s out there , yes a few break the pump drive gear I'd say 99% of them are from tightening them down past 13ft lbs. And 1% manu def. So IMO the billet piece is beautiful and strong, but givin the price for a tiny chunk of aluminum, VERY Unnecessary expensive insurance for a 1% defective failure rate. Once you add the piece made by wicked you instantly strengthen and distribute the load of the bolts down force across the entire top and not just at the bolt . The drive literally cannot break and force it's Way outta the block with this cheap insurance piece installed.
