Would it be worth it?
Hey guys this might be a hard question to answer but here it goes.
I have a 4 bolt main LT1 block out of a corvette that's in great condition. It was for a project i was going to build but i ended up going with something a little different. I also have a scat 4340 knife edge 383 crank and i was contemplating building a shortblock to sell. I would get 4340 pistons and rods of some sort all new bearings have it completely balanced. All done by a machine shop
But My question is is it worth it to go through all this trouble to build a 383 shortblock?
Is there any market right now for a 383?
I would need to get at least 2k out of it for it to even be worth it.
any input is greatly appreciated

Yea, there's a market for a forged 383 shortblock...I just bought one from a forum member a few months ago....and paid a little over $2K for it. You should easily get $2K minimum if all quality forged parts and quality machine work.
Just looking on the local craigslist, some yahoo wants $2300 for a basically stock rebuilt 4 bolt main vette motor:

This one is a forged 355 asking $1850:

Soooo, you basically want to build this motor up to sell it to make money?? I would simply sell the 4-bolt Vette block and the crank separately and be done with it. Investments are easier and quicker if you actually have less time involved. Hard to get your money back with labor and all...

As a person that has been looking for a good deal on a built short block project being abandoned, I'll talk.
I don't know much about the knife edge crank you mentioned but for myself looking it'd be an Ohio or Callies for a stroker, or a stock crankshaft in a 355 version. Too many negative discussions with scat and eagle, exspecially cast ones. I wouldn't want to see Scat or Eagle I-beams either but would accept there H-beam versions at the very least. Preferably a compstar rod. As far as a piston there are many good ones out there and I'd personally accept most quality forged ones after some research on the ones available in an offered short block. But they would be best not being boost type pistons (-16cc or more), these type pistons are for a very narrow group of short block hunters, flat tops for a resale motor. This type of short block probably ain't gonna be available for $2000 very often so I would not think about trying to throw one together for resale at that price.
I may be a bit more picky about the parts than necessary but durability and longevity is a must for me. I will wind up putting together a short block myself I can see.

Rob94hawk,
The crank weighs 49lbs
3DFORMULA,
the forged scat and eagle stuff is plenty strong for most peoples builds and i have seen them in 800+hp motors without issue. And I or anyone els who is buidling a decent motor would never put a cast crank in. As for the rods my mechanic will not use anything but H beam rods either.
Im not looking to build it to make a lot of money im simply looking to not loose anything and get it out of my garage.
The only reason im thinking of doing this is because the owner of the machine shop owes me a favor and he suggested putting the shortblock together for free so i could sell it. So the only thing i would have to buy is parts and he will get them for me at his cost.
quick95lt1,
I don't have the stock crank but if your interested in the block shoot me a PM but i got to tell you the last two shipping quotes i got were not pretty that's why it didnt sell 4 months ago when i had it up for sale
