What are you going to do with them (cam specs)? What bad stuff are you reading about "LS7's"?

I can't imagine the LS7's giving bad service. They're what the factory uses and most LSX engines don't have any lifter problems. What bad things have you heard about them from reputable people?

If you want to buy something in between I think the GMPP "cadillac racing" lifters are about your only choice.
Really though few people "need" to replace lifters, they just do it for no good reason and then make up excuses for "saving" money buying second rate stuff elsewhere where it could have really helped.

The only thing you have to watch with LS7 lifters is people running them too loose and beating the pushrods cup to death...

That's why I don't agree with the latest fad on here of OMFGZ run your lifters way loose and it will make sick HP yo!.

Above is the reason that's a BAD idea for a STREET engine.

Run .060 - .080 preload like you're supposed to and they will give great service...

I would go a step further and say why in the hell does everyone have to buy lifters period?
Nobody had any problems with stockers.

Far as the loose lash thing, that got pushed hard when a the false prophet was selling valvetrains that would self destruct in as little as 2000miles for use on true street cars that saw actual mileage.

His excuse was they needed to run less lash. In reality his stuff did run better that way because the reduced plunger travel bounced the valve off the seat less. It could have run better yet if he had understood valvetrain and not sold so much mismatched stuff.

Any part that gets used enough will have a list of failures. What you have to figure out from those is if the failures were a result of boneheads using the parts wrong (wrong lash for example) or for the wrong application (trying to rev too high for example) or if the part is actually a poor design.

I've always run my LS7s at 1/4 TPZL with good results. Spinning the crap out of them OMFGZ.

A quarter turn is fine. It's those who used to listen to Bert Bower or LE who would regurgitate the "loose is fast" horse **** and use little to no preload. No control of the valve train, the clips would get hammered after pushrods would walk and everyone would blame the lifter instead of their own incompetence.

My motor has a tick when cold. Not constant but comes and goes.

Once its warmed up it goes away usually.

In my position how would I know if its really a lifter or not?

First I would check the exhaust. IMO MOST LT1 "lifter ticks" are exhaust leaks.
