Default coil question

i bought a 96 trans am, long story short dad tried to clean the engine now the motor wont fire. i changed the opti but still no fire, read the codes it threw the coil, and opti. MY QUESTION can a coil fail and wont let the car fire????????

yes they can and do fail.

Yes. Check the ohms on the coil.

im a little worried i didnt line the opti in place properly with the cam but then again i did hear the motor fire for a sec then shut off. im starting to wonder if its the coil since i did give me a code

go to ur local auto parts store and pick up a spark tester.......its a little clear piece of plastic with a light inside and it plugs in line with a plug wire........put it in line off of the coil.......if there is nothing coming out of the coil its proabably the coil unless you drenched the opti to the point where the encoder cant even send a signal back to the ECM.....but i doubt thats it
