5LBS of boost on higher mileage, is it safe
Hey guys, my dad's 1997 camaro has 164xxx miles, all stock aside from shorty headers, and exhaust. A buddy of his is selling a paxton blower that was on his lt1 untill he pulled it to sell the car, kit has everything aand is only 700 bucks. his car was up kept very well for the past 6 years, no leaks, no knocks or taps. you guys think he should be ok or should he just pass, any info would be awesome!!

Correctly installed and tuned the car should be fine. LT1s are stout motors even under moderate boost (6-7 lb) when the A/F ratio is kept in check and never allowed to go lean. Colder plugs might be a good precaution though.

Get a MSD BTM (adjust the timing down for hot days), step colder plugs and poor some holy water on it it should be ok. My stock pump worked fine at 450 rwhp on my procharged car many moons ago. If you are going to use the FMU and not have the car tuned I wouldnt buy the kit. If you are going to have it tuned 42# injectors are more than enough for that blower. The car may make 350-365 to the wheels on a great day if it is a M6

If he's not going to use the FMU then I dont think the BTM should be needed. If he ditches the FMU then larger injectors and a tune are in order and whoever tunes the car can back the timing down to a safe level.

hey guys, and yes it has the fmu, but he was having problems with it when it was on his car i found out today, he said the car would stumble at about 4k RPM, sounds like a fuel issue to me, or could it be a bad FMU?

Could definitely be fuel related. If you pick up that kit, get rid of the FMU, swap in a Walbro 255 pump, bigger injectors, and have it tuned. You'll be happier, FMUs are not an exact science and usually end up making the engine run much too rich just to stay on the safe side for the manufacturers sake.
