S10 converter, bang for the buck or no?
hey guys, went to my buddies shop. There they had a barely used s10 converter he would sell for 40 bucks. Guy did a 5 speed swap in his s10, and i was wondering would it be worth it to buy considering i dont have they money for a better one, and its only 40 bucks. If im not mistaken they stall at like 2100, which would be a little improvement right? or just pass. Any info would be great.

The S-10 TC was an easy swap/upgrade with the hotcam setup was was used mainly in the B-bodies. They were rated, like you said, @ 2100-2200 stall. But as the LT world began to get bigger, then the LSx started to grow, there was a huge call for higher stalls. By 1999 there were more TC builders than you can imagine. So the S-10 thing went away.
IMO, if you have no big mods, it'll do. For the most part, all it really does is eliminate alot of the clunk/pull when placed in gear. But you'll have some fun when you flash the stall.

If youre drag racing a 2100 stall is a waste of the effort to change the converter. Sure you might pick up a tenth, or get rid of some low speed cam surge, but why buy 2 converters? Just buy the better one the first time and save the price of the S-10 converter.

My buddy's and I have switched out several transmissions on 4th gens, takes about 8-9 hours to swap one completely (without a lift, taking time, double checking everything). If you're doing the work yourself, then (maybe) a tenth in the 1/4 for $40 wouldn't be so bad. But, if you're paying a shop to do it, forget it. For the labor you'd pay at a shop, you could buy a yank, vigilante, circle d, ect "big boy" stall.
